Owner Testimonials
The Darby Canyon Spinoni family has grown over the past ten years.
We feel fortunate and blessed to have these beautiful dogs in our lives.
They have gifted us with their love, loyalty, beauty and also the
friendship of their human companions.
I'd like to take this opportunity to share with you some great testimonials written about my
Mum-In-Law, Diana. She truly cares for each and every animal that has come into her life.
As one of her human children, I have personally witnessed the many lost hours of sleep, devotion,
and sacrifices that she has made to us as well as her countless dogs, cats, horses, goats, fish, you
name it. If you think that the postal carrier is reliable through rain, sleet, and snow, you have not
met Diana.  She will go to the ends of the earth for her children.  She has taught me so much
about responsible dog ownership and the rewards of loving our 4-legged companions.
Recently, my own 4-legged companion, Janie, a 11 year old Rott passed.
The pain in losing her was a grief that I could not bear, and the silence in my household was
deafening.  I quickly learned that not only did I miss her companionship, I missed the peace of
mind that she provided our family this past decade.  After many sleepless nights, I too began my
own adventure into searching for a new pup.
Diana's guidance throughout these years proved to be invaluable.  She certainly raised the bar for
me.
Because of the lessons that she had taught me, I learned what to look for in a dog breeder/
fancier, what questions to ask, and I also knew the warning signs of a bad breeder.  My husband
and I fancy large breeds that some will label bully breeds. I could not find any breeder that had
the standards that my Mum-In-Law had with her dogs.  I wanted a puppy that had an excellent
temperament, was socialized and also housebroken. It was also crucial to me that all of the dogs
raised and bred by the breeder lived within the confines of the breeder's home, not outside in a
kennel where none of the above could apply. In my quest, I learned that things aren't always
what they appear., and most importantly, I learned to read between the lines
.  She had warned
me that many breeders breed only for the sake of money. A telltale sign? The multitude of litters!
Diana does not label herself a breeder.  She believes only in breeding when there is quality and
her progeny is proof of that.  She does not breed simply to breed.  Much to the dismay of many
on her waiting list, she has only had 4 litters since 2002!
We now have added not 1 but 2 Dobermans to our family with her help.- Amy
"We contacted breeders after we decided we wanted a Spinone to join our family.  Our first
call was to a breeder on the East coast and when we mentioned we wanted to see pups before
we made the final decision they recommended we contact Diana Cannon.
Diana's care and love of her dogs was abundantly clear over the phone and through emails as
she educated us about Spinoni.  While we were interviewing her as a breeder, she likewis was
making sure we would be right for one of her precious puppies.
We were lucky enough to be able to stop by her house and visit while she had a four week old
litter sleeping in their kennel smack dab in the middle of her living room.   She had us remove
our shoes and wash our hands upon entering to ensure no diseases were carried inside.  We
could tell these pups were well socialized, curious and comfortable with strangers as were her
adult dogs.  All accepted us after a quick check and we enjoyed meeting a playing with both
the sire and the dam of the litter.  Even at four weeks, Diana, already knew the personalities
of each puppy.
We ended up matching up with a brown roan female pup whom we named Sophie.  When we
returned to Diana's house to pick her up four long weeks later we were met with happy,
active puppies  playing in a well maintained outside exercise area.  Diana had prepared Sophie
for us to take home, first by calling her by the name we had given her so she already
answered to it, by getting her set up with medical, AKC papers, microchip id implant and tag,
a care manual, baby blanket that had the scent of the litter and her parents on it, food and
all sorts of wonderful advice for which we were grateful.   Finally, before we walked out the
door with Sophie we signed a contract with Diana, the main purpose being the protection of
the puppy.  We are truly impressed with the amount of care and concern Diana has for her
puppies.
We've lived with Sophie now for several months and we thank Diana for the care she gives in
her selective breeding which produces puppies of outstanding personalities and a foundation of
health and intelligence.  She is by far the most conscientious breeder we have ever had the
experience to meet and we keep tapping her for her breed knowledge and basic puppy care
and she keeps checking with us to make sure everything in Sophie's world right."

"Lola is our dearest puppy girl.
She was born on June 27, 2008
Diana Cannon is the breeder from Driggs,  Idaho
My husband Joe and I met Diana about 6 years ago at a Dog Show in Boise,  Idaho.  We were
very interested in adding a Spinone to our Golden Retriever family. We were so impressed
with Diana, in that, her love of this breed was so apparent to us.  Her integrity was quite
evident with her commitment to preserving this breed.
Two years later , with her help, we rescued a two year old Spinone that needed a good home.
Sofia is now 6 years old and is a wonderful member of our family.
The last two years have been very difficult.  Joe, my husband,  was diagnosed with throat
cancer. Therapy has been extremely difficult but Joe is doing well now.
We also had a loss of our last Golden, Harry, who lived to be almost 12.   We both miss him
terribly.  Ironically,  we planned to add Lola to our family so, one and a half weeks after
Harry died unexpectedly,  we brought Lola home.  One week after that,  Joe had surgery to
remove a tumor in his lung.
Our days were full of fear,  anxiety, sadness,  and exhaustion.
Lola added laughter to our lives.    That little being brought good feelings to Joe, Sofia and me.

I adore this little girl.   She takes great pleasure living in her "puppyhood"  phase.  She also
exudes her happiness running headlong throughout the house and now in snow much higher
than her and Sofia loves to join in her play.  Sofia has not shown this kind of happiness in a
long time.
Everyone who sees our girls cannot walk by without asking about them.  Sofia is well behaved
and has been a wonderful big sister, showing Lola manners in public especially.  Lola charms
EVERYONE.   The first thing strangers say of her is how sweet she is.   I know this trait is not
an accident.   Diana chose two parents with not only outstanding physical attributes but also
calmness and sweetness in their personalities.  Intelligence is also quite apparent in the parents
who passed this on the this exceptional litter.
Our veterinarian is not only impressed with Lola's physical body with good joints, and muscle
but also her sweet little personality.   He loves seeing her and seems to forget anyone else is
around when she is in his office.  I can just see him "melt" when she runs to him wagging not
only her tail but her whole back end.
Diana has another quality I had not mentioned yet.   She does not casually let go of her babies.
She is still very much attached to them and wants the very best for them.  We are so lucky to
have met her and to have this perfectly wonderful girl,  our Lola.
By the way,  I am a watercolorist and Sofia and Lola have decided, with my help,   will be
writing a book about their adventures in the mountains of Idaho."

"I am thrilled to have a Spinone puppy from Diana Cannon.  After many years of searching
for a Spinone puppy and after many years of phone calls and conversations I knew she was
the right breeder for me and this was confirmed when we received our puppy, "Cosmo".  I first
had to pass her test.  After a lengthy conversation where the pluses and minuses of the breed
were discussed and I was asked dozens of questions concerning everything from why I wanted
a Spin to how I would care for my Spin, I passed the test and now have a gorgeous male
orange roan named Cosmo who is the light of our lives.  Diana made sure to contact us
weekly with pictures as the litter was growing and continued to ask questions in order to
make the correct match.  Upon picking up the pup she had an entire binder containing AKC
registration materials, vet visit information, training tips, how to prepare your house for a
puppy and on it went. She even included more pictures as well as a blanket with the mother's
scent on it make the transition easier. She made a perfect match and we have had no health
problems with Cosmo.  He is everything she promised and more.  I would highly recommend
Diana Cannon for anyone who is considering a Spin puppy and even if you are not she is a
wealth of information on Dogs in general."

"I have known Diana Cannon for several years… I believe around 4.  I contacted her through
her website because I had been interested in Spinone Italiano’s for several years prior and the
time was right to begin my search for a pup.  Diana has always been extremely helpful and
forthcoming about the strengths and weaknesses in the breed.
After several years of contacting various breeders in the region and some quite far away, I
was convinced that Darby Canyon Spinone was where I wanted to get my pup.  Factors
weighing into this decision were Diana’s knowledge and experience with Spinoni.  One of the
biggest factors in my decision was Diana’s dedication to the breed.  She had opportunities to
choose a sire at much less cost to her, but due to health issues, temperament issues, or merely
breed conformity, she held out breeding her dams only with a suitable sire.  Diana is also quite
particular about the homes that her pups go to which gave me more confidence that I would
receive the pup I was searching for.
I have visited Diana and her dogs on several occasions.  First at a dog show in Blackfoot, ID.
She invited me to visit her home and meet her dogs on several occasions.  I have visited her
several times and every time I visit her home is in excellent condition.  All her animals are
taken care of extremely well.  She cares for all of her animals with diligence and compassion.
She cares for several dogs that don’t have breeding potential and have expensive health and
maintenance issues, which indicates to me that greed is not a consideration in Diana’s
breeding priorities.
I have had my pup for six months and Paolo is a very happy, healthy pup and is doing very
well.  I am very comfortable in recommending Darby Canyon Spinone and Diana Cannon to
care for any animal and also as a responsible breeder and steward for Spinoni.  Feel free to
contact me for a reference if needed."

"Rocco is such a treasure!  He is absolutely adorable, and has insinuated himself gently but
firmly into the family and our lives since he first settled into the car for the long ride home.
A little library research on the part of Egan and me led us to the breed, and a little more
internet research put Mike and Egan in contact with you, Diana.  We are delighted beyond
measure with our new little "boy" spinone.  His disposition is wonderful, playful, but not ever
argumentative or harsh.  He shows every evidence of great tracking & retrieving skills
already, too!
He truly IS still a "Lovebug", but he is busy doing and learning lots of other things, too.  He
loves to take Egan's stuffed animals off his bed and parade around with the "prizes" as well
as to play tug of war and chase with any and all of us, luring us with the GUND toys!  He is
currently around 50lbs, has been to obedience school where, although he was the youngest
(and cutest!), he was also award winning and the star of the class.  He will return in
January for intermediate obedience class work, and meanwhile Mike is working with him on
fetching training.
He shows awesome natural hunting and tracking instincts, which he has ample
opportunities to develop as we take him for long walk abouts around the area and in our
travels.  To date he has been all around southern Oregon, as well as to Nevada and
California with us.  He loves to run, wrestle and "dance" with Egan.(and Mike)  We have not
had much snow, but mostly beautiful warm and sunny days which has been great so that
Rocco has lots of time outdoors to play and run.
Diana, you know your babies well -- he is currently in a tremendous eating and growth
spurt, and developing some of that adolescent "spunk".  His color is developing to a beautiful
roan coloring with a lovely, thick coat.  He is happiest when he is with his family, and loves
to travel with us, play with us, and even watch TV with us.  He particularly likes the old
"Get Smart" series, but has an eclectic taste in various older reruns as well.  His favorite
treat is carrots, but he loves vegetation and vegetables of most any kind.
We wanted also to thank you so much for Rocco!  He is truly a most wonderful, loved
addition to our family and has brought us so very much happiness.  We have many, many
pictures, but our photography skills are still developing so not all of them are very good :  {
We'll keep you posted on new adventures with Rocco, and try to keep you updated on his
development and activities, too.  For Christmas, he will get a chance to meet our other two
sons, Egan's older brothers, who will be home from college for awhile, and can't wait to hug
Rocco and play with him in person.  They live on the east coast during the school year, so he
will have some family changes coming up soon!"

"We picked up our first puppy from Diana in the spring of 2004. Luigi (Lu) is a hunting
machine that loves to be loved. We decided to get another puppy this summer because Spinoni
ARE like chips- You can't have just one! Vitto-the new puppy-is a social butterfly that hasn't
met a person he didn't want to be friends with.
Diana puts such love and pride into breeding and raising her dogs. It shows in the physically
beautiful, happy, well adjusted puppies she produces.
We are so happy to have these dogs in our lives. Diana's interest in her dogs after they leave
her home is incredible. She truly is Nana Diana!"

"Diana breeds wonderful Spinoni.  Nothing but the best, and it shows!
These aren't just our dogs... they are part of our family!  Brains AND beauty, AND hunters as
well!  Prada is
four years and Milly is four months; different bloodlines but the same wonderful Spinone
personality!  We
absolutely love our girls!"

My husband and I are the proud owners of the smartest, most beautiful dog in the world.
First, I want to thank Diana for breeding the most charming and beautiful puppy ever.  Nellie,
aka Nellie Benelli, charms everyone she meets.  Her temperment is such that she enjoys life,
and everyone around her seems to enjoy life more when she's there.  Its my intention to have
her become a therapy dog, and her therapy dog trainer commented that she could probably
test, and pass, within a few months, thereby becoming the youngest therapy dog in California.
This comment came during our first training session.  At 6 months old she was doing all the
requirements but the down for 5 minutes.  After all she is a puppy, and its hard for them to
stay still that long.
Second, not only is she charming, but she's amazing in the field.  At 4 months she was
pointing and retrieving, with no training whatsoever.  Just a "Nellie bring it back", and off she
went to get the bird and bring it back.  The first time we allowed her a water retrieval was
last week.  Initially she hesitated, as we had told her previously she wasn't allowed in the
ponds, but then when she heard "go get it", in she went.  Problem was, the bird was about as
big as she is.  But Nellie, the die hard, went and brought it back.  Still without any training.
She's amazing, and it could only be the result of amazing breeding.
Finally, thank you for breeding the most beautiful puppy.  I refer to her as my Disney dog, as
she has the happy Disney face.  Her markings are perfect, her face is perfect, she is simply
perfect.
